Sankranti is celebrated to mark the beginning of the harvesting season in India. Lakhs of kites are flown during the Sankranti at Hyderabad in particular Telangana. The kite-flying tradition during Sankranti festival period is taking place for so many decades in Telangana State

To revive this tradition, Government of Telangana had celebrated International Kite Festival coinciding with Makar Sankranthi at Hyderabad during January 2016, 2017, 2018 & 2019 in a befitting manner which also promoted tourism across the globe.

During 2016 & 2017, the International Kite Festival was organized at Aga Khan Academy. During 2018 & 2019, International Kite Festival was organized at Parade Grounds, Secunderabad where around 8,00,000 & 12,00,000 visitors respectively have witnessed the event.

In addition, International Sweets Festival was also organized during 2018 & 2019, where large number of delectable sweets of different states & countries were showcased with more than 1,000 varieties of sweets which were prepared by Hyderabad residents who original hail from other States & Countries, along with this, snacks were also being displayed.

Government of Telangana has decided to celebrate “International Kite & Sweet Festival, 2020” from 13th to 15th January, 2020 at Parade Grounds, Secunderabad.

It is an exciting 3-day festival celebrated with fun & fervour which coincides with Makara Sankranti festival, a harvest festival. The festival brings together regional arts, crafts, cuisine and an array of national and international kites.

The festival will have participation from 15 countries having 40 International & 60 National kite flyers and a special night-flying event is scheduled on 13th 14 & 15th January, 2020. The 3 days of kite flying will be hosted at the Parade Grounds, Secunderabad on 13th, 14th and 15th January, 2020.

Different types of kites with huge sizes will be flown during the festival thus making the sky more colourful. Various cultural programmes will also be organized promoting the local culture of the State.

Apart from the kite festival, food courts with various cuisines of Telangana, handicrafts & handlooms stalls will be showcased. Traditional games will also be organized at Gymkhana grounds during the three-day festival.
