EVMs can be rigged

Aam Aadmi Party legislator Saurabh Bhardwaj gave a live demo of “how Electronic Voting Machines or EVMs can be rigged.” The former minister began his show by explaining how different parts of an EVM work and then conducted a mock poll on a voting machine he had carried to the assembly.
The AAP test was conducted on a machine “similar” to an EVM and not an original EVM, he clarified.

“There are secret codes that can be used to decide on the day of voting which candidate can win,” alleged Mr Bhardwaj, who introduced himself as a former computer science engineer who has worked in several companies in India and abroad before he joined politics.

He claimed that to rig a machine, “only the motherboard needs to be changed and that can be done in 90 seconds.”

Mr Bhardwaj said his demonstration was meant to show that “any machine can be rigged or hacked,” making a case for reverting to paper ballot, AAP’s key demand for recent elections. “Give us access to the EVMs that will be used in the Gujarat elections (later this year) for only three hours.
..I challenge the BJP will never be able to win there then,” Mr Bharadwaj said to much laughter in the assembly which is dominated by AAP.

Soon after assembly proceedings began today, the BJP’s Vijender Gupta was thrown out of the house for creating a ruckus; the Speaker called in marshals to evict Mr Gupta, one of four BJP legislators in the house.

The ruling party’s Alka Lamba brought up EVMs, saying AAP had made repeated requests but was not given access by the Election Commission to an original EVM to prove its charge that it can be tampered.
AAP alleges that voting machines have been manipulated to help the BJP post massive wins in the Uttar Pradesh assembly polls and Delhi civic elections recently, which saw AAP decimated just two years after it swept assembly elections.

The party invited leaders of other parties like the Left, Trinamool Congress and Janata Dal United to watch its demonstration and they were seated in the visitors’ gallery.
